In 2021, the Prime Minister instructed Joyce Murray, the previous Fisheries Minister, to act on a mandate commitment to phase out open-net pen salmon farms in coastal British Columbia waters by 2025.

The federal government says the transition is needed to protect wild Pacific salmon.
