Icelandic land-based salmon farmers share optimistic production ambitions

Emerging aquaculture companies in Iceland are advancing major land-based salmon production projects, pointing to the country’s clean water, renewable energy, and available land as key advantages for moving salmon farming out of the ocean and onto land.

At the 2026 North Atlantic Seafood Forum, leaders from Losna Seafood, Laxey, and Thor Salmon outlined plans to scale land-based Atlantic salmon production using flow-through systems, deep seawater intake, natural filtration, geothermal energy, and automated monitoring technologies.

Laxey has already begun harvesting from its land-based facility, reporting strong biological performance, while Thor Salmon is preparing for its first harvest in 2027. Together, the projects show growing confidence that land-based aquaculture can produce salmon at commercial scale without relying on open-net pens in coastal waters.
