Fisheries and Oceans Canada is reviewing the Pacific Salmon Allocation Policy, which was first introduced in 1999 to guide how allowable Pacific salmon catch is allocated among First Nations, commercial, and recreational fisheries.
DFO says the policy needs to be updated because salmon management has changed significantly since 1999, including new conservation requirements for stocks of concern, changes to fisheries management, new treaties and reconciliation agreements with First Nations, and court decisions affirming First Nations fishing rights.
The review reinforces that conservation and sustainable management must remain the highest priority, followed by First Nations right-based fisheries. It also highlights the need for clear, modern salmon management rules as wild Pacific salmon face growing pressure across B.C.
