Sámi Parliament Calls on Norway to Act on Open-Net Fish Farms
In a recent Fish Farmer Magazine article, the Sámi Parliament Council in northern Norway is calling on the Norwegian government to tighten rules on salmon farming and move the industry to closed-cage systems. The Council says salmon lice and what it calls “toxic emissions” from open-net farms are threatening wild salmon in Sámi territories. It is also concerned about the growing use of chemicals in the industry.
The Council points to British Columbia as an example. There, the Canadian government plans to stop issuing new permits or allowing more capacity for open-net farming by the end of the decade. It also says Norway should act on what local communities are seeing on the water rather than wait for scientists to confirm it.
Indigenous communities across the ocean are seeing the same harm to wild salmon from open-net pens. Canada committed to a 2029 transition, and it must follow through.
