Sustainable land-based aquaculture in British Columbia
Gold River Aquafarms is developing a land-based recirculating aquaculture system facility in Gold River, B.C., designed to produce steelhead salmon without relying on open-net pens in coastal waters.
The company says its project will be a 3,000-metric-ton land-based steelhead farm and the largest approved facility of its kind in Canada. Built on the site of a former pulp and paper mill, the facility will use existing infrastructure while applying RAS technology to control water quality, manage fish health, and reduce impacts on wild fish, marine habitats, and surrounding ecosystems.
Gold River Aquafarms says its model is designed to support sustainable seafood production, regional food security, and new economic development for coastal communities, while offering a practical alternative to conventional sea-cage fish farming.
