David Eby urges for removal of ocean-based salmon farms in BC
On December 5, 2023, the provincial government urged for the transition of ocean-based salmon farms to closed containment systems. This statement followed a surge in recent reports highlighting a spike in the number of wild fish deaths caused by salmon farm operations in BC waters last year.
“That is the direction we know the province is going, the federal government is going, and the industry is going. We all just need to work together to ensure that that’s delivered.” – David Eby, Premier of British Columbia.
Recently published data from Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) shows ocean-based salmon farms cause unnecessary harm to marine life and vital ecosystems within BC. DFO is being called on by the Province of BC to follow through on the federal government’s commitment to remove salmon farms from BC waters by 2025.
