Draft Transition Plan released to support open-net pen ban in BC

On June 19, 2024, the federal government announced a ban on open-net pen salmon farms in coastal BC waters by 2029. To support industry through this five-year deadline to transition, the government has now released a draft Salmon Aquaculture Transition Plan for British Columbia.

With this draft plan, we want to ensure that protecting wild Pacific salmon and phasing out ocean-based salmon farms in BC remain top priorities. We also expect clear regulations on enforcing the ban, as well as rigorous testing for disease and sea lice under the new conditions of the licence.

A successful plan will include key milestones to support this transition, while positioning BC as a “world leader” in the adoption of land-based closed containment technology.
