Majority of First Nations in BC Support Removal of Open-Net Pens from BC
First Nations Chiefs from across BC are calling on the federal government to make good on its commitment to phase out open-net salmon farms by 2025.
“This is a very clear opportunity for the federal government to take meaningful actions for reconciliation with First Nations literally across the province of British Columbia and in doing so enacting a safeguard for food security,” said Bob Chamberlin, Chair, First Nation Wild Salmon Alliance.
Shackan Indian Band Chief Arnie Lampreau added that with depleting stocks, his community has been forced to buy wild salmon from Alaska.
The majority of First Nations in BC support the removal of open-net pen salmon farms from BC waters.
