Research Finds PRV and Associated Disease Symptoms at B.C. Salmon Farms

Dr. Kristi Miller (and co-authors) has reported in a published paper that piscine orthoreovirus (PRV) and associated disease symptoms of Heart and Skeletal Muscle Inflammation (HSMI) and jaundice are present on B.C. salmon farms.

This paper has identified jaundice syndrome as a disease impacting a Chinook salmon farm near Tofino, and the disease is suspected to be viral-induced.

This issue begs further urgent study and the full application of the Precautionary Principle in the meantime. If it turns out to be true that we have PRV (a Norwegian virus) causing disease in Pacific salmon (jaundice), then the transition of the open net pens onto land becomes all the more urgent.
