Samherji advances sustainable aquaculture

Samherji Fish Farming is expanding one of the world’s largest land-based salmon farming operations through its “Salmon Garden” project in Reykjanes, Iceland, a facility designed to produce up to 36,000 tonnes of salmon annually using renewable geothermal energy and advanced water treatment systems.

“This is a project on a massive scale that will positively impact the local community in Reykjanes,” said Jón Kjartan Jónsson, Managing Director of Samherji Fish Farming, following the successful financing of the project’s first phase. “I am proud of our employees who have made this achievement possible with their experience and expertise.”

The facility is being built in three phases and is expected to become one of the most energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable land-based aquaculture operations globally. Samherji says the project will create approximately 100 knowledge-based jobs while significantly increasing Iceland’s land-based salmon production capacity.
