UBCIC calls on DFO to include First Nations oversight and monitoring
At the UBCIC 56th Annual General Assembly, held from September 24-26, First Nations leaders and chiefs from across BC unanimously passed Resolution no. 2024-55 with full support.
Resolution no. 2024-55 states: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED the UBCIC Chiefs-in-Assembly call on Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) to include independent First Nations monitoring and oversight in the process of transitioning away from open-net pen fish farms, including the decommissioning of open-net pen fish farms, in accordance with their stated objective to improve trust, transparency, and clarity of regulatory goals and actions.
The UBCIC Chiefs-in-Assembly calls on DFO to include First Nations oversight and monitoring throughout the Open-Net Pen Transition Plan process and leading up to the 2029 ban—ensuring transparency and trust in DFO science and decision-making.
