A new policy paper from the University of Exeter is calling on the United Kingdom to establish a national centre for land-based seafood production—or risk falling behind in the global shift toward modern aquaculture.

The proposed centre would bring together research, regulation, workforce training and business development to accelerate investment in recirculating aquaculture systems, known as RAS. These systems can produce seafood in controlled, land-based facilities while using significantly less water and reducing pressure on marine environments.

The researchers argue that investing now could create new jobs, strengthen domestic food production and position the UK as an exporter of aquaculture engineering, water-treatment and fish-health technologies.

The article offers another example of countries recognizing the economic potential of land-based aquaculture. Canada has a similar opportunity to support innovation and sustainable seafood production while moving open-net pen salmon farms out of British Columbia’s coastal waters.
