A lake in the sky: a new model for fish farming in Kenya
The Fish Site profiles Vertical Lake, a Kenyan aquaculture company using a stacked-tank, land-based system to raise traceable fish while reducing pressure on natural water bodies.
The model is designed to work in water-scarce regions by recycling water through a controlled production system and turning waste streams into useful products, including organic fertilizer and collagen. Rather than relying on conventional ponds, Vertical Lake’s approach brings fish farming into a closed, efficient, and more climate-resilient environment.
The project shows how land-based aquaculture can support local food production, improve resource efficiency, and create value from byproducts that would otherwise be treated as waste.
