Pacific Seaweed Summit highlights new opportunities for B.C.’s blue economy

The inaugural Pacific Seaweed Summit in Campbell River brought together researchers, Indigenous leaders, industry professionals, government representatives, and community members to explore the future of seaweed aquaculture in British Columbia.

Hosted by North Island College, Wei Wai Kum First Nation, Heiltsuk Climate Action, and the Pacific Seaweed Industry Association, the summit focused on how seaweed can support food production, environmental restoration, sustainable materials, and coastal economic development. Participants also discussed the importance of ensuring Indigenous and local interests are reflected as the sector grows.

With more than 600 native seaweed species along B.C.’s coast, the summit highlighted Campbell River’s potential as a hub for seaweed restoration, cultivation, and innovation, including products such as food, fertilizer, and carbon-storing building materials.
