Fisheries Minister Joyce Murray breaks “the stranglehold of DFO aquaculture scientists” on public policy. According to Karen Wristen, Executive Director of the Living Oceans Society, the Minister has shown DFO how to apply the Precautionary Principle: that in situations of scientific uncertainty, one should not allow business as usual to persist and instead, take steps to eliminate risks. The decision to eliminate 15 open-net pen salmon farms has caused backlash from the BCSFA, who claim they cannot afford the technology upgrades required by the transition plan. Licenses for the industry, however, cannot be renewed without mitigating the farms’ impact on wild salmon. Read full op-ed on National Newswatch here.
