NPAFC reports lowest odd-year harvest of Pacific salmon
National Fisherman reports that North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission member countries harvested 425.7 million Pacific salmon in 2025, the lowest aggregate weight for an odd-numbered year since 1987.
Odd-numbered years typically see stronger salmon harvests because pink salmon are more abundant, but the 2025 catch was 25% lower by weight and 27% lower by number of fish compared to the recent five-year average for odd-numbered years. The report also notes that the 2025 harvest was 41% lower than the record catch in 2023.
The findings point to the continued uncertainty facing Pacific salmon across the North Pacific and reinforce the need for stronger protection, habitat recovery, and precautionary management to help rebuild wild salmon populations.
