Urgent need to remove open-net pen salmon farms as wild pacific stocks hit historic lows
With wild Pacific salmon stocks at historic lows, the need to remove open-net pen salmon farms is now more urgent and important than ever.
“I truly see the need to get rid of all the farms. The removal of the farms from the Discovery Islands area was really effective at helping the juvenile salmon, which were affected by the lice and disease pathogens coming off the farms,” says Karen Wristen, Executive Director, Living Oceans Society. “But salmon still have to run a gauntlet of farms up by Port Hardy – and all along the West Coast of Vancouver Island where there are fish farms, wild fish populations have just plummeted”.
Industry has known they need to make a change since 2019. It’s time to end the pens.
